With all the Webelos crossing over in the next few weeks, many parents will soon be faced with the need to purchase equipment for their new Boy Scout.   What gear would all of you very knowledgeable Boy Scout leaders say is essential for new scouts to make sure they purchase.  What recommendations do you have as far as brand, model, etc. ?

Re: Essential Gear

Uniform First - with all the proper insignia. After that we recommend the first priority to be good footwear. Scouts are on their feet for an entire outing, and they need good boots or rugged shoes, and socks. The second priority is good sleeping gear, a below-zero sleeping bag and a groud mat. Our troop supplies tents, cooking gear, etc., and we camp by car mostly, so we next recommend gear for personal comfort. This would include layers of clothing (shop yard sales for "Camp Gear"), water bottles, personal first aid and hygiene, and so on.
